Our removal companies know the city's unique moving challenges inside out.
Surrey doesn't behave like one removals area. A Guildford flat and a Peaslake lane are different jobs. Send the removal company photos of the street, driveway, front steps, gate, and nearest legal stopping point before they quote. Without that detail, the wrong van can arrive and the team may spend the first hour carrying from a road they never planned to use.
A permit bay is not a full moving space. Surrey County Council says vehicles can load in permit bays only for as long as necessary and no longer than 20 minutes, which is rarely enough for a house move. Check street restrictions early, and ask Surrey County Council about a bay suspension or waiver if the van needs to stay put. Driveways and quiet side roads may be fine, but in marked bays or CPZ streets, “two wheels on the kerb” can still fail where waiting restrictions cover the whole highway.
Surrey doesn't have a county-wide congestion charge or Clean Air Zone, but the London ULEZ can matter fast. If you're moving from Epsom, Ewell, Molesey, Worcester Park edge, or another border area, ask your removal company whether the van is ULEZ-compliant before the route is agreed. The M25 itself is outside the zone, but routes into or across Greater London can still trigger a charge. Moves staying inside Surrey are usually unaffected, so this is mainly a London-bound or cross-London question.
A short Guildford route can become a long wait. Markets and events can close the High Street between Quarry Street and North Street or Chertsey Street, with The Shambles, Chapel Street, and Market Street also affected. Check Guildford Borough Council's road closure list before you pick your time, and flag GU1, the station, and Stoke when you brief the team. If the van is using Worplesdon Road or the A3, say that too. The A3/A322 Dennis Roundabout works running from May to December 2026 add another trap, with lane closures and slip-road disruption near a route many vans would normally use.
A large lorry can be the wrong answer in the Surrey Hills. Around Shere, Peaslake, and Abinger, narrow lanes, high hedges, bends, and limited passing places can stop a full-size vehicle from reaching the house cleanly. Send lane, gate, and turning photos to whoever you book, and ask whether they would use a smaller shuttle van from a wider road. It may take longer, but it's better than having the main vehicle stuck on a lane with nowhere safe to turn.
A multi-storey is not a removal-van back-up. Town-centre flats in Guildford and Woking need a loading plan before the van arrives, and Epsom, Redhill, and Leatherhead station flats can have the same problem. Guildford's Bedford Road multi-storey has a 1.83m height limit, and Woking's Victoria Place car parks list 2.1m barriers. Book the lift, concierge approval, and loading bay before move day. If the slot slips or the van gets turned away at the barrier, the first wardrobe may still be upstairs when the schedule should be moving.
Give movers the details that affect the job, not just the number of bedrooms. Share your moving date, destination, inventory, parking situation, and photos of the route from your front door to where the van can stop. In Surrey, access can vary a lot, so a flat near Guildford station, a house in Woking, and a lane near Shere may all need different planning.
Look for a company that asks proper questions before quoting. They should want to know about parking, stairs, lifts, fragile items, and whether a large van can reach your property. Reviews, insurance, and a clear written quote all matter, but a good survey is often the easiest way to spot whether they understand the job.
Book once your moving date is likely, especially if you want a Friday, packing help, storage, or a larger vehicle. Leave extra time if you need to arrange a lift slot, check parking restrictions, or sort a bay suspension through Surrey County Council. If your move is straightforward and you have a driveway, you may have more flexibility, but last-minute bookings give you fewer options.
Tell them where the van can stop, how far the carry is, and whether there are stairs, lifts, gates, narrow lanes, or parking controls. Photos help more than a long description, especially for flats, town-centre streets, and Surrey Hills properties. The aim is to avoid the wrong vehicle turning up or the team finding out on the day that they can’t load from the front door.
Yes, many movers offer full packing, fragile-only packing, or materials for you to pack yourself. Ask what’s included, how delicate items are wrapped, and whether they’ll dismantle larger furniture. Packing support is especially useful if there’s a long carry, a lift booking, or a smaller shuttle van involved.
