Which Shipping Option Do You Need?

Arranging your shipping in advance is crucial. There are multiple options to choose from when shipping furniture overseas. Therefore, it’s important to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of each before reaching your decision.

Since the UK’s exit from the EU, there are additional stages to the moving process when transporting goods to other European countries. Therefore, you need to ensure you know the various timeframes.

Cyprus can be accessed via land, sea, and air. This means you can choose from the following:

  • Shipping freight
  • Road freight
  • Part-load
  • Air freight

You can use one mode of transport or a combination, depending on your needs and requirements.

Sea Freight

Shipping freight is a popular transport mode suitable for all-size moves. It is often regarded as the most cost-effective option thanks to the container size options. You pay for the size container that you need. This means that you can fill the container with your belongings knowing that you have an allocated amount of space.

Cyprus has 5 major ports with Larnaca and Limassol being the most popular ports. Here are the main ports you should know:

  • Port of Larnaca
  • Port of Latsi
  • Port of Limassol
  • Port of Paphos
  • Port of Pomos

Depending on your goods, you can choose from a 20ft or 40ft container. 20ft containers are great for smaller moves and 40ft containers are needed for larger moves. 40ft containers are also ideal for heavy items such as furniture and vehicles. They can hold an enormous amount of weight, meaning that you won’t be penalised or restricted by what you can ship.

Shipping freight takes approximately 4 weeks to arrive. This is dependent on the departing and final destination. There is also a chance of delays which can prolong the process.

Road Freight

Road freight is similar to shipping freight as it can accommodate small and large moves. There are varying vehicle sizes to choose from, meaning you can hire a full truck or a portion of space within a larger vehicle. Road freight takes around 22 days on average.

Road freight is among the slower modes of transport. However, it can be extremely cost-effective.

Part Load

Part-load is when you are assigned a portion of a container. The remaining space will be made up of other people’s belongings. Part-load is the cheapest shipping option, making it the perfect choice for smaller moves and those on a tight budget. However, it is the slowest mode of transport with an average of 6 weeks from the UK to Cyprus.

Part-load is slow because the transport will likely have to make stops along the way. The more stops that are made, the longer the shipment will take. It is also an unsuitable option for larger moves.

Air Freight

Air freight is the most expensive shipping option because it is the fastest. It is ideal for those who have the money to spend and want their goods as soon as possible. There are 2 airports in Larnaca and Paphos, with the former being the main airport.

Air freight from the UK to Cyprus takes approximately 5 days. This is perfect for those who want a quick move and wish to have their belongings with them as soon as possible.

This is not a suitable option for those on a strict budget as air freight is calculated by weight. This means that moving household goods can be extremely costly. Air freight also boasts high carbon emissions, meaning that it has a negative impact on the environment.

What Documentation Do I Need?

Since Cyprus is a member of the EU, there are extra steps that UK citizens must take following Brexit. Having the correct documentation means that you minimise the risk of delays and issues during your application. Make sure you have the following:

  • A valid passport
  • Proof of funds
  • Medical insurance (minimum of €30,000)
  • A recent and original letter from your employer
  • Confirmed accommodation
  • List of contents in shipping
  • Relevant visa and permits

Even if your visa is approved, your application will be re-evaluated when you arrive in Cyprus.

UK citizens do not have an automatic right to residency in Cyprus. A Schengen Visa is required for those moving to Cyprus for up to 3 months. A residence permit must be acquired for those wanting to stay for a longer period. This can be acquired from VFS Global. You will then be invited to VFS or the Cypriot embassy for an interview. You will authenticate yourself and pay for the visa application at this stage.
